My Name Is Khan, which set many records last week including the biggest opening for its stars Shah Rukh Khan [ Images ] and Kajol [ Images ] and director Karan Johar [ Images ], shattered yet another record: it plunged about 69 percent in its second weekend in North America, becoming the first Shah Rukh Khan film to suffer such a loss.

The second weekend also saw a worldwide plunge of about 55 percent. It yielded about $6.3 million, according to Fox International Productions, the newly-formed Fox local filmmaking venture.

Yet, the film is a formidable player, grossing in the second weekend more than the earnings of expensive Bollywood films like Veer. It is likely to play in a significant number of theatres for at least two more weeks. Currently, it is showing in some 1,570 theatres worldwide.

MNIK, which unfolds against the backdrop of 9/11 and details a man -- afflicted with Asperger syndrome -- and his fight to win back his wife's love, has grossed $25 million worldwide, as per its distributor Fox. It could end its run with $30 million.

In North American, it grossed an impressive $700,000, taking the total to $3.28 million, making it the highest grossing Karan Johar movie. His previous film Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna [ Images ] grossed $3.27 million in North America three years ago. While this is a formidable achievement compared especially to Shah Rukh Khan's earlier hit Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi ($2 million in North America), it falls short of business for the all-time Indian box office champ in America, 3 Idiots. That film starring Aamir Khan [ Images ] grossed $6.6 million.

Meanwhile, Avatar dominated the world market grossing an awesome $67 million for the tenth consecutive week. Sliding by 22 percent, it took its total to $2.47 billion. According to The Hollywood Reporter, in addition to its worldwide record in current dollars, Avatar has now beaten 1997's Titanic's [ Images ] global $1.8 billion box office milestone on an inflation-adjusted basis as well.

It grossed an estimated $40 million. Even if it were to take a steep plunge in its second week, it could end up with a decent $100 million in North America alone.

'In Shutter Island, Scorsese has created a divinely dark and devious brain tease of a movie in the best noir tradition,' wrote Betsy Sharkey in Los Angeles Times, 'with its smarter than you'd think cops, their tougher than you'd imagine cases to crack and enough nods to the classic genre for an all-night parlor game.'

DiCaprio plays Teddy, a US marshal trying to make sense of the strange happenings in a prison on Shutter Island. Ben Kingsley plays Cawley, the prison's medical director.

Among the anti-Shutter Island critics, A O Scott was most belittling. Calling the film an overblown effort, Scott slammed it in The New York Times. 'Mr Scorsese's camera sense effectively fills every scene with creepiness, but sustained, gripping suspense seems beyond his grasp,' he wrote. 'Mr Scorsese in effect forces you to study the threads on the rug he is preparing, with lugubrious deliberateness, to pull out from under you. As the final revelations approach, the stakes diminish precipitously, and the sense that the whole movie has been a strained and pointless contrivance starts to take hold.'

Among the strong defenders of Scorsese was Roger Ebert. Giving the film three and half stars out of four, Ebert declared in Chicago Sun-Times, the movie had 'flawless directorial command... Scorsese has fear to evoke, and he does it with many notes.'

As for those complaining that the movie's ending 'blindsides you,' he wrote that he did not have a problem. 'This movie is all of a piece, even the parts that don't appear to fit,' he mused. 'There is a human tendency to note carefully what goes before, and draw logical conclusions. But -- what if you can't nail down exactly what went before? What if there were things about Cawley and his peculiar staff that were hidden? What if the movie lacks a reliable narrator? What if its point of view isn't omniscient but fragmented? Where can it all lead? What does it mean? We ask, and Teddy asks, too.'

Audiences apparently were undeterred by the negative comments.

Is Shivsena justified in protesting against SRK's stance on Pakistani players selection in IPL3

The question doesn't even arise 'cause there is only one answer for it NO ....absolutely no. Yes, everyone has the right to voice their opinion but while doing so, one has to be within the rules of the society. You just can't go out threatening anyone and beat up persons for something which isn't worth an issue at all. The Shivsena, in its efforts to get into the limelight and gain back its vote-bank, particularly, after their loss in the October assembly elections, is desperately trying to cook up this controversy.

All that SRK had said was that he would have preferred to have had some Pakistani players in IPL3. All that he wanted was good, normal ties between the two neighboring nations. What the heck is wrong in it!! How the hell does he become a 'traitor' by saying so?? Such allegations labeled against SRK are beyond my comprehension.

Bal Thackeray, Uddhav Thackeray and the rest of the 'T-Company' have gone all out in propagating hate speeches against the Bollywood Badshah. Don't they have something called 'common sense' .....if they don't have that, the least they could have done is to borrow some from normal human beings before putting up such stupid allegations against SRK.

It's an irony that even such kind of people exist even in the most cosmopolitan city of our country. It's a shame that no action is taken against a party that survives on spilling out venom on people from some parts of India. These people have tried to create divisions in India not only on regional grounds but also communal. This time they have crossed all limits ....they have targeted the most loved Indian actor all over the world for no fault of his own. It's high time that something action must be taken against these uncivilized barbaric people who send their children to English medium schools and talk about Maraathi Manoos!!

Coming to the question of Indo-Pak relations, of course, the major problem lies in the attitude of the political heads of both the nations but because of people like those in the Shivsena people-to-people contact initiatives will definitely get a beating. It's an open secret that even the Pak cricketers were under a major threat of being targeted by the Sena had they been picked up for IPL3. Surely that was a major reason for the team owners for not picking up Pak players for IPL3. Cricket is one of those peace-fostering tool that can definitely bring the two nations closer. Besides cricket, music and literature are two other ways of reviving peace between India and Pakistan but even that is under the threat of the goons of Shivsena. Hopefully, peace would overcome all these obstacles and let peace triumph.

As far as SRK is concerned, as a big fan of his, I can just wish him good luck and hopefully My Name Is Khan becomes the greatest hit of all time and even the people of Mumbai should get a chance to witness this movie!

All cinema halls both multiplexes and single screen theatres are reporting from 90 to 100 percent seat occupancy even in week days. That is unprecedented and even Aamir Khan’s Three Idiot didn’t got such a great reception.

NEW DELHI - Controversies notwithstanding, the Shah Rukh Khan-starrer “My Name Is Khan” has gone on to rake in around Rs.250 million (about $5.3 million) across the globe on the opening day.

Directed by Karan Johar, “My Name is Khan” was released Friday.

“We are delighted with the performance and audience reactions across demographics. More so, because this is only phase one of the film release,” Vijay Singh, CEO of Fox Star Studios India, the Indian distributors of the film, said in a statement.

“In addition to the release across 45 countries, MNIK will be rolled out in a phased manner across 25 non-traditional markets from April onwards.”

The film features Shah Rukh as Rizvan Khan who embarks on a journey across America to win back the love of his life, played by Kajol. It shows how, along the way, his personality touches the lives of many and inspires a nation.

The movie is being marketed and distributed by Fox Star in India, in the US by its sister company Fox Searchlight and in the rest of the world by parent group 20th Century Fox International.

In New Zealand, the opening day collection was about $9,727 while in the Middle-East, the movie is already 50 percent higher than any other previous film in Bollywood with the earning estimated at $300,000.

Theres also a huge demand for additional prints in the existing chains across the Middle East and the print count is expected to increase to around 60 by next week.

According to Fox, the film also will be released in Egypt, Jordan, Syria, Oman and Lebanon in the coming week.

In terms of paid previews, the movie earned about $193,000 from 89 sites in Britain, which is said to be the highest for a single-day preview there. In Australia Thursday, paid previews collected around $34,000 and it ranked number 11.

The movie earned a whopping Rs. 20 Crore in the US and another Rs. 7.05 Crores in Australia.


Star Fox Studio had released close to 2,000 prints worldwide in the US, UK, Gulf region and Australia. What's interesting is the fact that in many of the international markets the movie was among the top 5 giving competition to the likes of Avatar, Valentine's Day and The Wolfman. In India the movie did extremely well in Delhi-UP, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu and Kerela and also in Maharashtra and Gujarat where it released amidst protest.

Having managed to set the box office cash register ringing by generating close to Rs 40 crore in its opening weekend (Friday to Sunday) from India and abroad, Shahrukh Khan starrer My Name Is Khan (MNIK) has managed to find place amongst the top grossing Bollywood films of recent times.

The few other films to have grossed in the same range as MNIK in the opening weekends include 3 Idiots, Ghajini and Love Aaj Kal, say film trade pundits. Trade pundits expect the movie to gross over Rs 100 crore before the first week run is over. Only other films to have managed to cross the milestone in recent past are 3 Idiots and Ghajini, both starring Aamir Khan.

“MNIK opened to packed houses across all major international centres just like it did within the country. Combining the initial collection figures from UK, US, Australia and other overseas centre, the film would have grossed over Rs 40 crore in the first-three days,” says a leading film distributor from Mumbai.

The much-awaited and controversial MNIK had to face stiff opposition from Shiv Sena workers who did not wanted the people to see the film in protest of a pro-Pakistani statement made by Shahrukh Khan last month after the IPL-3 auctions.

In India, the film was initially released across 1,300 screens.

Another 500-600 prints went to the overseas centre. Most multiplexes in the country like PVR, Inox, Fame, Big Cinemas, Cinemax and Fun Cinemas among others have witnessed 100% bookings for the weekend shows.

“The bookings for all evening shows on Monday and Tuesday for MNIK are also overwhelming. We may see full-house even in the coming weekdays going by the advance booking figures,” a senior executive in DT Cinemas in Gurgaon said.

Shiv Sena targeted Shah Rukh Khan for his remarks which supports Pakistani cricketers should be included in the IPL. Shiv Sena dragged Amir Khan into this matter and addressed the duo as “2 Idiots”.



It is known from the sources that Shiv Sena gave a statement which says, "In real life, Aamir and Shah Rukh have been proved as '2 Idiots' as both are making stupid statements supporting the cause of Pakistani cricketers".



"On the one hand, while SRK is openly displaying his love for Pakistani players, Aamir has even put nationalistic sentiments in his utterances on this issue", "According to Aamir, if any cricketer is good, he would like to have him in his team, it makes no difference to him which country he belongs to," said the statement



The statement is even attached by a digitally modified picture of the recent megahit movie "3 Idiots". It shows the head of Aamir Khan (the lead actor of the movie) popping out of a drum and SRK extending out his tongue from another drum which denotes the heading of "2 Idiots".



Aamir had said Friday that if he were to select IPL players he would give preference to performance rather than nationalism.



The Shiv Sena Friday reacted viciously at Shah Rukh, who is also the Kolkata Knight Riders co-owner, after he said he would have picked a Pakistani player for IPL matches if his team had a slot.



Shiv Sena Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Raut said if the actor was so keen on them, "he could go play his matches in Lahore, not in India".



Thane Shiv Sena leader Eknath Shinde in his statement said that none of Shah Rukh’s films would be screened in the district. However, both the actors have not reacted to the Shiv Sena’s speech of denunciation.

Shah Rukh Khan Refuses To Apologise To Shiv Sena Over IPL Comments

Shah Rukh Khan denied to apologise to Shiv Sena over his comments on IPL, supporting the Pakistan Cricketers saying there is absolutely nothing wrong in what he said. Shah Rukh said, “I have done nothing wrong in saying what I said about Pakistani players and I said that as an Indian.”

He received support from Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan of the Indian National Congress who said that the screening of Shah Rukh’s latest, ‘My Name Is Khan’ will not be disrupted and “stern action” will be taken against those who try to do so.

Though Shah Rukh is confident that his ‘My Name Is Khan’ will sail through the waters without much trouble, some Bollywood names fear its happening.

Shah Rukh recalled the time when his ‘Billu’ released and said, “The question of apologising does not arise at all. I have had to apologise just before the release of Billu as well and people try to gain political mileage out of us.”

Apart from support from the Chief Minister the actor did not seem to receive any support from his Bollywood counterparts. Filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt said, “If you look at our history you will find each person fends for himself in Bollywood. The politics of silence rules Bollywood. Here it is not power but fear which corrupts absolutely.” Citing specific examples he said, “Shah Rukh Khan is fighting his own battle, Salman Khan’s ‘Veer’ has been pulled out of cinema halls in Udaipur but nobody is condemning it, ‘Fanaa’ was thrown out of Gujarat.”

Bollywood has time and again condemned allegations slapped on celebrities but not even once has anyone come out openly to support the other. Amitabh Bachchan and Aamir Khan only mentioned that politics should not interfere in sports but no one else came forward to support Shah Rukh strongly. Trade analyst Amod Mehra said in agreement with Bhatt, “The industry is suffering because it lacks leadership. We have presidents and chairmen for all film associations but not one who can fight for the film industry and nobody is strong enough to fight politicians."

Shringar Films,the film distributor in Mumbai was attacked on Monday and Balakrishna Shroff, Head of Shringar Films has written to Bal Thackeray, saying that unless ‘My Name Is Khan’ is cleared by him, they will not release it.

King Khan Takes Over New York City

Bollywood superstar Shahrukh Khan is currently in the U.S. to promote his new movie "My Name is Khan," set to open in theaters on February 12, and American media outlets are standing in line to get a moment with the popular movie star!

DesiHits! asked SRK how he prepared for his role as someone suffering from Asperger syndrome and he told us "I'm intrigued by what we call neuro-atypical behavior. My interest in the disorder started when I read a book about a boy with Asperger syndrome. I gave it to [the movie's producer] Karan Johar and told him he should make a movie out of it. Turns out I became the little boy he made a movie about! I also worked on the physical aspect of it, the eyes etc. and people were taken aback when they saw me for the first time on set."

Monday "The King of Bollywood" also gave an interview to The Wall Street Journal in which he revealed that "I'm hopeful to make one Hindi film that's seen by the whole world. Like, "Life is Beautiful," it was an Italian film but everyone saw it and loved it."

Speaking about "My Name is Khan," SRK also said that "Nobody knows where a film is going to go when you finish it. I think this will … touch a lot more people in the Eastern and Western world than any film has done before. I would love it to be a bigger hit than "Slumdog.""

Well we guess we'll find out on February 12! Until then we wish Shahrukh Khan all the best in promoting "My Name is Khan" all over the west.

Shah Rukh says his Pak, Mumbai comment is an individual stand

With the Shiv Sena pressing for an apology from him for backing Pakistani cricketers in IPL and for his remarks on Mumbai, Bollywood star Shah Rukh Khan today said he was sad that his statements are seen as a stand against a group instead of a stand for "myself and my individuality."

"Differences in ideology should be grounds for debate and discussions, a must for freedom of thought to see it any other way is so unforunate," he said writing in Twitter responding to fresh salvos at him from Sena leaders who have threatened to block the release of his much-awaited film 'My Name is Khan' next week.

"Sad my statements are seen as a stand against a group instead of a stand for myself and my individuality," Shah Rukh added. The star's "Mumbai belongs to all Indians" remarks had also earned the ire of the Sena.

Firing a fresh salvo at Shah Rukh today, Sena leader Sanjay Raut said he is speaking in favour of Pakistan sitting in Mumbai and in this country.

"We will not let this happen. This is the Congress opinion that SRK is voicing. SRK stays in Mumbai and Mannat is is in Mumbai and not in Pakistan," Raut said in Mumbai.

Shah Rukh has already hit back at the Shiv Sena by saying that he would stand by his statements and that his take on the issue is very strong. He added that there is no excuse for his statement and believes that he is an Indian.

He had termed the stance of the Shiv Sena as unhealthy, undemocratic and insensitive. He said that he is confident that their efforts would not affect his film commercially.

World premiere of My Name is Khan will be held in Abu Dhabi next week.

Thousands of screaming fans are expected to descend on the capital on February 10 to catch a glimpse of the actor who is often called King Khan or the King of Bollywood.

The director, Karan Johar, has had a string of successes with films such as Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge, starring Khan and the Bollywood actress Kajol. With this project he reunites the pair for the first time in eight years.

The film will be shown at the Berlin International Film Festival after its Abu Dhabi launch. It is set for world-wide release on February 12.

Shah Rukh Khan, who had advocated the inclusion of Pakistani players in Indian Premier League (IPL) matches and invited the ire of Shiv Sena in Mumbai, seems to be getting in deeper trouble with the posters of his upcoming flick ‘My Name Is Khan’(opposite Kajol and directed by Karan Johar) being torn in Nagpur.
The Shiv Sena on Sunday held a demonstration outside his home, even as the actor and his colleague Aamir Khan were dubbed by the party as “2 Idiots.”

The protests came after suspected Shiv Sena activists went on the rampage on Friday tearing down posters of Mr. Khan in Thane district over his remarks that Pakistani cricketers should not have been ignored for the third edition of the IPL tournament.

“In real life, Aamir and Shah Rukh have been proved as ‘2 Idiots,’ as both are making stupid statements supporting the cause of Pakistani cricketers,” said a statement in the Sena’s Hindi mouthpiece Dopahar Ka Saamna.
