‘Titanic’ sails past $2 billion at the box office

It might just be a re-release, but 'Titanic' in 3D has sailed into the record books. The James Cameronmovie has crossed the $2 billion mark, second only to 2009 sci-fi thriller 'Avatar' which has taken in $2.8 billion. According to Reuters, the movie now stands at $2.03 billion worldwide, adding to its $1.84 billion gross in its original release.

The 3D re-release also recorded the best box office opening ever in China this weekend, claiming $58 million for international distributor Fox. The huge China opening for "Titanic" and receipts from 69 other territories upped the global haul in its second overseas weekend to $88.2 million. The films re-release was timed to coincide with the 100-year anniversary of the ship's sinking.

There was a time when casual sex was a complete no-no in Bollywood. Remember the scene in 'Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge' (1995) where Raj (Shah Rukh) had to give Simran (Kajol) a long monologue on 'hindustan ladki ki izzat' after he had joked that there might have been a night of drunken lovemaking between them.

In 'Hum Tum' (2004), Karan (Saif Ali Khan) had to quickly propose marriage after a night of passion with Rhea (Rani Mukherji). Karan felt that was the right thing to do since they had inadvertently ended up in bed after an emotional outburst. Fortunately, Rhea turns down the proposal on the ground that only love should be the reason for such a big commitment. Well, Karan was only following the SOP (Standard Operating Procedure) — remember, according to 'hindustani sabhyata' you wed and then you bed or you only bed who you will eventually wed.

More recently, in 'Band Baaja Baraat' (2010), while the morning after was awkward between Bittoo (Ranveer) and Shruti (Anushka), there wasn't too much talk about the 'kand' as they called it.

In fact, it was actually a relief to see that other recent films like 'Jodi Breakers' and 'London Paris New York' treat sex as a natural progression of a boy-girl relationship and not as something that is seen in isolation, only symptomatic of the corrosion of Indian tradition.

If Hindi films mirror societal changes (at least, they claim to in some cases), does that mean we as a society have become more open to casual sex? While the depiction of casual sex on celluloid has come a long way from 'DDLJ' in 1995 to 'LPNY' in 2012, how much has our take on casual sex changed?

NEW DELHI, April 9, 2012 (AFP) - India's World Cup cricket hero Yuvraj Singh returned home on Monday after receiving treatment for a cancerous tumour in the United States.

Sporting a black jacket and red baseball cap, the 30-year-old all-rounder gave thumbs up signs to well-wishers who had gathered at New Delhi airport to welcome him back.

"He is absolutely fine and will rest at home for another 10-15 days," his mother Shabnam Singh told reporters at the airport.

Left-handed Yuvraj, named man of the tournament after India's World Cup triumph at home last April, was diagnosed with a rare condition, mediastinal seminoma -- a malignant tumour between his lungs -- soon after the event.

After completing three sessions of chemotherapy in Boston in March, he had moved to London before returning to India.

"Finally the day has come! i am going home tomorrow! cant wait, excited to see my friends and family ..see you india!!," Yuvraj said on Twitter on Sunday.

Thousands of well-wishers, politicians, his team mates and other sports personalities including US cycling great Lance Armstrong had sent messages to the ailing all-rounder who is known for his aggressive batting and disciplined spin bowling.

"Today the entire country is happy, god is happy and I am very happy. My son has come back as a winner," Yuvraj's father Yograj Singh told the NDTV news channel.

Yuvraj, who scored 362 runs and bagged 15 wickets in nine World Cup matches, has not played competitive cricket since taking part in two of the three home Tests against the West Indies in November.

He has scored 8,051 runs in 274 one-dayers and 1,775 in 37 Tests since making his international debut in 2000.

"It was very painstaking. It took us 60 weeks. Director James Cameron looked at every frame of film to convert it into 3D and there were 2,79,000 frames," Landau told HT.

"What Titanic is going to show people is that 3D enhances drama and not action, because all of a sudden, in an intimate moment between Jack and Rose (the lead characters in the movie), we've sneaked into that room with them and are observing that very private moment," he said.



Kate Winslet's regrets
Kate Winslet recently revealed that watching her 1997 hit Titanic was a "profoundly weird experience", even declaring that watching the film was like watching "a home video".

"It's like saying 'We're going to show three and a half years of your life, live to the Albert Hall!" the Mirror quoted her as saying. And she clearly didn't like her accent.

"My American accent was bad!" she said.

And guess what... that's just one of her regrets. Referring to her nude scene in the film, the Oscar winning actor even said that she had a sinking feeling at the prospect of being seen naked in the 3D version of Titanic.

"I'm not going to look. I'll be in the bar by that point. I wish I hadn't shown so much flesh but I was young and I knew I had things to prove," she told The Sun.

Incidentally, the film's very popular and iconic love track My Heart Will Go On makes Winslet want to throw up.

What sent Leonardo DiCaprio 'crawling under the seat'
Though the actor couldn't make it to the premiere of the film, lead actor Leonardo DiCaprio wasn't exactly happy after watching the film.

"I didn't show him the whole film but I showed him 18 minutes of it a few months ago. It was a good reunion for us but great to watch his reaction. He couldn't believe it. He said to me, 'I'm such a young punk. Look at me.' He was practically crawling under the seat. It was a good moment," dailystar.co.uk quoted Cameron as saying.

Also, possibly the most unbelievable and unheard of fact about the Titanic release in India is that it has been okayed by the Censor Board without cutting out the nude scene featuring Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio.

Titanic's last lunch menu was auctioned in Britain fetching a huge sum of 76,000. It was among hundreds of items from the doomed ship auctioned in Wiltshire ahead of the 100th anniversary of its sinking in the Atlantic Ocean.

The menu was dated April 14, 1912, the day the cruiser hit an iceberg and sank, killing 1,522 people.

It featured several courses, such as eggs Argenteuil, consomme fermier and chicken a la Maryland.
